Some photographs catch your eye because of their colors. Others draw you in because of their light. And sometimes, it’s the mood of a scene that makes you stop and look a little longer.
This photograph, taken at Daytona Beach Shores, Florida, is one of those images for me.
At first glance, it’s a beach, a pier, and a lifeguard chair. Something you might see at countless beaches along the coast. But look a little closer, and the scene begins to tell a different story.
Seeing Beyond the Ordinary
What I love about this photograph is the contrast.
The sky is filled with heavy clouds, the ocean stretches quietly toward the horizon, and the beach seems almost empty. The pier stands in the distance, reaching out over the water.
And then there’s the lifeguard chair.
That red chair immediately draws your attention. Against the muted tones of the beach and sky, it becomes the heart of the photograph. Your eyes are pulled toward it, and from there, you begin exploring everything else in the frame.
Without that touch of red, this would be a very different image.
That’s one of the things I enjoy about photography. Sometimes it isn’t about finding something extraordinary. It’s about seeing something familiar in a way you haven’t seen it before.
Why Black and White?
I’m drawn to black-and-white photography because it changes the way we experience a scene.
Without all the colors competing for our attention, we begin to notice the shapes, textures, light, and shadows. The clouds become more dramatic. The sand takes on a different character. The pier becomes a striking structure against the horizon.
For this image, keeping the scene largely monochromatic while allowing the red lifeguard chair to stand out creates a different kind of visual experience.
Your eye has somewhere to go. But once you’ve noticed the chair, you’re free to wander through the rest of the photograph.
I like that.
A photograph doesn't always need to tell you exactly what to see. Sometimes it simply gives you a place to begin.
What Do You See?
One of the things I love most about photography is that everyone brings something different to an image.
Someone might see a quiet beach. Someone else might notice the approaching storm clouds. Another person might be drawn to the old pier or the red lifeguard chair standing alone in the sand.
And someone else might look at the image and feel a sense of peace.
There’s no right or wrong answer.
That’s the beauty of it. We don’t all have to see the same thing for a photograph to mean something to us.
For me, this image is a reminder that there is often more to an ordinary scene than we first realize. Sometimes all it takes is a different perspective, a little attention to the light, or a willingness to experiment.
And sometimes, all it takes is one unexpected splash of color.
That’s what I love about photography.
The world is full of photographs waiting to be discovered. We just have to take the time to notice them.
Thanks for joining me for another installment of Through My Lens.
Until next time, keep looking. You never know what might catch your eye.
