Photographs That Carry Our Memories | Bob Pinto

What does an old photograph bring back? Explore a Connecticut sunrise, lasting memories, and the stories hidden behind every image. Read Bob’s story.

Have you ever looked at an old photograph and found yourself remembering things you hadn’t thought about in years?

It might bring back a place you haven’t visited in a long time, someone who was part of your life, or a moment that seemed ordinary at the time but means much more in retrospect.

That’s one of the things I’ve come to appreciate about photography: a photograph can capture a moment and bring back an entire chapter of your life.

A photograph can capture a moment, but sometimes it also brings back an entire chapter of your life.

Seeing a Familiar Place Through Different Eyes

Recently, I had the opportunity to return to a place in Connecticut I hadn’t visited in 27 years: Calf Pasture Beach in Norwalk.

I spent a lot of time there growing up, playing softball and coaching. I lived in Connecticut for 37 years, and coaching became a defining part of my life. I truly believe God led me into it, and I can see now how much the experience shaped the person I became.

It was also through softball, in that same area, that I met Dot.

This time, I returned without softball equipment. I had my camera with me.

I’d hoped to photograph the sunrise, and I wasn’t disappointed. Oranges and reds filled the sky as the sun rose over the water, with two sailboats in the distance. Another photographer had come with the same idea, and we shared the morning’s attention on the sunrise.

But for me, the scene carried more than its colors and boats. I was standing in a place tied to years of memories, seeing it from a different point in my life. I appreciated the moment in a way I probably wouldn’t have years ago.

The Story You Can't See

Two people can look at the same photograph and see very different things. Someone viewing my sunrise photograph might notice the brilliant colors, the sailboats, or the sun’s reflection across the water—that’s what I hoped to capture.

When I look at it, I see the place where I grew up. I think about the years I spent coaching, the people I met, and the experiences that shaped my life. I think, too, about how God opened doors I never could have imagined.

None of that is visible in the photograph, but all of it belongs to its story. I suspect many of us have pictures like that: images that might seem ordinary to someone else but mean the world to the person who took them.

Photography Has Changed How I See Things

For much of my life, coaching softball was one of my greatest passions. Today, photography has become another. They’re different pursuits, but both have taught me to be patient, observant, and attentive to what’s happening around me.

Coaching taught me to notice the little things. Photography has reminded me of that lesson in a different way: pay attention to the direction of the light, the movement of the clouds, a bird sitting quietly in a tree, or the colors of the sky reflected in the water.

These are details that are easy to overlook when we’re moving too quickly. And sometimes the most meaningful part of making a photograph isn’t the image itself, but where you were, who you were with, or what was happening in your life when you took it.

A Reminder to Appreciate the Journey

Returning to Connecticut reminded me how much can change over the years. Twenty-seven years is a long time. Our lives take unexpected turns; we develop new interests, meet new people, and sometimes discover passions we didn’t have the opportunity to pursue earlier.

Still, the places and experiences that helped shape us remain part of who we are. I believe God uses different seasons of our lives for different purposes. Years ago, I didn’t know where coaching softball would lead me. I certainly didn’t know I’d one day return to that same park with a camera, hoping to photograph a sunrise.

I’m grateful for both chapters, and excited to see where photography takes me next.

What's the Story Behind Your Photograph?

The next time you come across an old photograph, take a moment to look beyond what’s in the picture. Consider what it brings back: Where were you? Who was with you? What was happening in your life?

You might be surprised by the memories that return. That’s part of what makes photography so special to me. It isn’t always about capturing the perfect image; sometimes it’s about preserving a moment that becomes more meaningful as the years go by.

The most important part of a photograph isn’t always what you can see. Sometimes it’s the story you carry with you.

Until next time, keep looking for beauty in the everyday moments.

One Red Chair on a Gray Beach | Bob Pinto

What makes an ordinary beach unforgettable? See how one red lifeguard chair transforms a quiet Daytona Beach scene. View the story.

Some photographs catch your eye because of their color. Others draw you in through their light. Sometimes, it is the mood of a scene that makes you stop and look a little longer.

This photograph, taken at Daytona Beach Shores, Florida, is one of those images for me.

At first glance, it is a beach, a pier, and a lifeguard chair—something you might see at countless beaches along the coast. But look a little closer, and the scene begins to tell a different story.

Seeing Beyond the Ordinary

What I love about this photograph is the contrast.

Heavy clouds fill the sky, the ocean stretches quietly toward the horizon, and the beach seems almost empty. In the distance, the pier reaches out over the water.

And then there is the lifeguard chair.

That red chair immediately draws your attention. Against the muted tones of the beach and sky, it becomes the heart of the photograph. Your eyes are pulled toward it, and from there, you begin exploring everything else in the frame.

Without that touch of red, this would be a very different image.

That is one of the things I enjoy about photography. Sometimes it is not about finding something extraordinary. It is about seeing something familiar in a way you have not seen it before.

Why Black and White?

I am drawn to black-and-white photography because it changes the way we experience a scene.

Without colors competing for our attention, we begin to notice the shapes, textures, light, and shadows. The clouds become more dramatic. The sand takes on a different character. The pier becomes a striking structure against the horizon.

For this image, keeping the scene largely monochromatic while allowing the red lifeguard chair to stand out creates a different kind of visual experience.

Your eye has somewhere to go. But once you have noticed the chair, you are free to wander through the rest of the photograph.

I like that.

A photograph does not always need to tell you exactly what to see. Sometimes it simply gives you a place to begin.

What Do You See?

One of the things I love most about photography is that everyone brings something different to an image.

Someone might see a quiet beach. Someone else might notice the approaching storm clouds. Another person might be drawn to the old pier or the red lifeguard chair standing alone in the sand.

Someone else might look at the image and feel a sense of peace.

There is no right or wrong answer.

That is the beauty of it. We do not all have to see the same thing for a photograph to mean something to us.

For me, this image is a reminder that there is often more to an ordinary scene than we first realize. Sometimes all it takes is a different perspective, a little attention to the light, or a willingness to experiment.

And sometimes, all it takes is one unexpected splash of color.

That is what I love about photography.

The world is full of photographs waiting to be discovered. We just have to take the time to notice them.

Thanks for joining me for another installment of Through My Lens.

Until next time, keep looking. You never know what might catch your eye.

Why Wildlife Photography Keeps Calling Me Back | Bob Pinto

What keeps pulling a photographer into the wild? Bob Pinto shares the stories, lessons, and moments behind his wildlife images. Read the story.

There’s something about photographing wildlife that keeps pulling me back.

Maybe it’s the unpredictability.

You can spend a long time waiting and see nothing. Then, suddenly, everything changes. An animal appears, the light falls just right, and for a few seconds, you have a moment you’ll never get back.

That’s part of what I love about wildlife photography.

You can’t control the subject. You can’t ask an animal to move a little to the left or hold that pose for another five seconds. You have to pay attention, be patient, and be ready.

And sometimes… you miss the shot.

That happens too.

You Have to Be Present

Wildlife photography has taught me that being there isn’t enough.

You have to be present.

You have to watch what’s happening around you. You start noticing movement, changes in light, sounds in the distance, and little things that might tell you something is about to happen.

Sometimes the photograph comes together almost instantly.

Other times, you wait… and wait… and nothing happens.

But I’ve learned that the waiting is part of the experience.

It gives you time to observe instead of rushing.

And when something finally does happen, you appreciate that moment even more.

Not Every Great Moment Becomes a Photograph

This is something I’ve had to remind myself of.

There are moments in nature that are beautiful but simply don’t translate into a photograph the way you imagined.

The light might not be right. The subject might move too quickly. The background might be distracting. Or maybe you just weren’t ready.

But that doesn’t mean the moment was wasted.

I still saw it.

I was still there.

And sometimes, that’s enough.

Photography has actually made me appreciate those moments more. I don’t feel like every beautiful thing has to become a photograph for it to have value.

Sometimes you just get to experience it.

Chasing the Moment, Not the Perfect Photograph

I think it’s easy to get caught up in trying to create the perfect image.

The perfect composition.

The perfect light.

The perfect moment.

Of course, I want to make the best photograph I can. But I’ve also learned that the photograph I remember most isn’t always the technically perfect one.

Sometimes it’s the one that brings me back to the moment.

Maybe I remember where I was standing.

Maybe I remember what I was thinking.

Maybe I remember waiting for that animal to finally look in my direction.

That’s what makes a photograph meaningful to me.

It becomes more than an image.

It becomes a memory.

Why I Keep Coming Back

Wildlife photography keeps teaching me to slow down, stay patient, and pay attention.

And maybe that’s why I enjoy it so much.

There’s always something new to see.

No two encounters are exactly the same. No two moments unfold in quite the same way.

You can visit the same place over and over and still come away with something different.

That keeps it interesting.

That keeps me curious.

And honestly, I think that’s one of the best parts of photography.

You never completely figure it out.

There’s always another photograph to make, another place to explore, another moment to notice.

So the next time you see a wildlife photograph, remember that there may have been a whole lot of waiting behind those few seconds.

And sometimes the waiting is where the real story begins.

Thanks for joining me for another week of Through My Lens.

Until next time, keep looking.

You never know what you might see. 📸

It’s easy to move through life without really seeing it.

We wake up, check our phones, rush through the day, get from one place to another, and before we know it, another day is gone.

Photography has taught me to slow down.

When I’m out with my camera, I start noticing things I might normally miss. The way light falls across a mountain. The expression in an animal’s eyes. The way shadows transform an ordinary scene. A quiet moment that lasts only a few seconds.

Those moments are part of what draws me to photography.

I don’t always know exactly what I’m looking for when I head out with my camera. Sometimes I’m simply exploring. Sometimes I’m waiting for the right light. And sometimes I’ll see something completely unexpected that makes me stop and think, There it is.

That moment is what I’m after.

Looking Beyond the Obvious

One of the things I love about photography is that two people can look at the same scene and see two completely different photographs.

One person might notice the dramatic sky. Someone else might notice a tiny detail in the foreground. Another person might be drawn to the mood or the story the image seems to tell.

There’s something pretty special about that.

A photograph doesn’t have to explain everything. Sometimes it simply needs to make you pause.

That’s what I hope my photographs do.

Whether I’m photographing a landscape, wildlife, or working in black and white, I’m looking for more than just a technically good image. I’m looking for something that creates a feeling.

Why I Love Black and White

Black and white photography has a special place in my heart because it removes some of the distractions that color can bring.

Without color, I find myself paying more attention to light, texture, shape, contrast, and emotion.

A photograph can become quieter in black and white, but sometimes that quietness says more.

I think that’s one of the reasons I keep coming back to it.

Photography Is About More Than the Photograph

For me, photography isn't just about pressing the shutter.

It’s about being present.

It’s about getting outside. Exploring. Waiting. Watching. Learning. And sometimes simply standing still long enough to appreciate what’s right in front of me.

That may be one of the greatest gifts photography has given me.

It reminds me that there is beauty everywhere—but you have to slow down long enough to see it.

So the next time you’re outside, take a moment.

Look up.

Look around.

Notice the light.

Notice the little things.

You may be surprised by what you discover.

And who knows… you might even find a photograph waiting to be taken.

Thanks for stopping by Bob Pinto Photography.

Take a look around, explore the galleries, and maybe you’ll find an image that makes you stop and see something a little differently.

📸 Bob Pinto
